Introduction

Hello everyone — I’m Anthony Giannini, and I’ve just joined the MFA Classical Guitar Academy with genuine gratitude (and a beginner’s reverence) for the discipline this instrument demands. My working life has been a long apprenticeship in integration: art and design, history and philosophy, education and philanthropy, alongside cognitive science at Harvard and ongoing work around human genius and artificial intelligence. What draws me to the classical guitar is its quiet severity — the way a single hand position can turn into a lifetime — and the way musical truth refuses jargon. I’m here to learn in public, practise in private, and become more precise, more honest, and more musical.

The guitar’s lineage feels, to me, like a centuries-long refinement of resonance: a migration from courtly ancestors such as the vihuela and the baroque guitar toward the modern form shaped in the nineteenth century by Antonio de Torres, then given…

Hello Anthony and welcome. You gave a nice, short history of the evolution of the classical guitar. Nicely done! I have three guitars, all made in the Torres style. I intentionally wanted the tradtional sound and chose that instead of many of the modern innovations like the doubletop, etc. These clsssical guitars are at home in the classical world of Sor, Tarrega, Carcassi, Dowland and of course, the great Bach, amoung many other great composers. However, this guitar is equally adapt for playing Irish music, such as that written by Turlough O’Carolyn and even modern music. I’ve been very impressed by classical transcriptions of many Beatle tunes. The magic of the classical guitar, with the sound of nylon ( or other) strings is a very special sound.

I was able to see in person the great Segovia in 1972 and his performance was magnificent, even though he had aged. I’ve also been privileged to see Christopher Parkening, the complete Romero family and Pepe Romero several times. I’ve been able to see many fine classical performers and still hope to see Sharon Isbin, David Russell and to see Anna Vidovic again. There are so many great performers and so little time. Again welcome. If you are beginning, you will find it equally difficult and rewarding. You have chosen a very fine teacher and musician in Merce. Enjoy and again welcome. Paul.

Hello everyone, I'm from Germany and studied classical guitar in the early 90s. I had to stop playing classical guitar due to injuries caused by poor technique. Luckily, I could still play electric and acoustic guitar, so I continued working at music schools. But after 15 years, I missed classical guitar so much that I had to start again. I decided to start from scratch and began working on my technique, which was a tough ride. The internet helped me a lot, but in the end, the effort was worth it. While searching for information, I also found Merce's channel. I was able to get many helpful tips. She's always on point, and I love her gorgeous playing. I really hope she finds the time to publish more music vids or only the music( it’s not so much work). That's why I decided to join your community. Seems to be…

Welcome, and thank you so much for sharing your story, it really means a lot. Returning to classical guitar after injuries and rebuilding your technique from scratch takes courage, patience, and real love for the music. You can absolutely hear that depth in your playing.

The sound quality, musicality, and calm focus in those videos are beautiful, and Kessy clearly brings some excellent inspiration too 🐾😊

I’m very glad that some of my videos could be helpful along the way, and I truly appreciate your kind words (and your understanding of how much work goes into recording, that made me smile). Staying focused on the music while recording is indeed one of the hardest parts, so what you’re doing now, sharing small pieces with intention, is exactly the right approach.

This community is lucky to have you here. I’m really looking forward to seeing you in the groups and following your journey. And please give Kessy a big hug from Ragnar and me, that wagtail was received loud and clear 🍀✨

All the best,

Merce 💛🎸

Hello from America's southwest and Tucson, Arizona. It is a new year and I am hoping to start anew with classical guitar. I have been away from guitar for a very long time, but now have the time and interest to dive in again with a nicely structured program. I enjoy classical music and particularly classical guitar. Watching Merce play has been my motivation, and I am looking forward to learning good technique, all that I did not learn in my youth.

Good luck Sam. Enjoy the process!

Hello.

Hello :-) I started classical guitar recently, I mainly play fretless bass but I wanted something I could play without worrying about amps, cables and really expensive strings. I'm loving it so far, I have a lot of learning to do and Merce's videos seemed the best by a long way. I'm so glad I joined :-) it's grate to be able to chat to other folks who love the classical guitar.

Welcome to the Academy, and I’m really glad you’re here 😊

Coming from fretless bass is actually a beautiful background, your ear, sense of intonation, and phrasing will transfer much more than you might expect. Classical guitar will feel like a new world at first, but you’re building on a strong musical foundation already.

Take your time with the learning curve, there’s no rush here. If you ever feel unsure what to focus on, the roadmap and the replays are there to guide you step by step, and of course the community is always happy to help.

Really happy you joined, and enjoy the journey 🎸✨
