How to Ship a Classical Guitar Safely – My Full Packing Process
Shipping a classical guitar can feel daunting. Whether you're sending your instrument for repairs, selling it, or moving to a new location, ensuring it arrives safely is a top priority.
I recently had to ship my guitar back to its luthier, and I documented the entire process in a new YouTube video! In this blog post, I’ll break down the key steps to properly packing a guitar and minimizing the risk of damage.
1. Choosing the Right Box
The box you use is crucial! Ideally, you’ll want a double-walled cardboard box specifically designed for guitars. If possible, reuse a box from a previous guitar shipment or order one from a trusted source.
2. Protecting the Guitar Inside the Case
Before even thinking about packing the outer box, you need to secure the guitar inside its case:
Loosen the strings slightly to relieve tension.
Use soft foam or fabric to support the headstock and prevent movement.
Wrap a soft cloth around the bridge and inside the case to prevent shifting.
3. Packing the Guitar in the Box
Once your guitar is snug in its case, it’s time to protect it inside the shipping box:
Foam blocks or air cushions work great to absorb shock.
Ensure there is no empty space inside the box—any movement increases the risk of damage.
Tape the box securely and clearly label it as "Fragile – Handle with Care."
4. Choosing the Right Shipping Method
I always recommend using a trusted courier with insurance and tracking for peace of mind. International shipments require special attention, so always check customs regulations and required documents.
