One of the most enchanting sounds on the classical guitar is the harmonic — that bell-like, ethereal tone that seems to float effortlessly above the strings.Although they sound magical, harmonics are based on very simple physical principles, and once you understand how they work, they become a powerful tool to expand your musical expression.

In my newest tutorial, I dive into the world of guitar harmonics. Whether you're just beginning to explore these sounds or want to strengthen your technique, this lesson will give you a clear understanding of how harmonics work and how to produce them cleanly and confidently.

What Are Harmonics?

When you lightly touch the string at specific points (called nodes) and pluck, the string vibrates in a special way, creating a high, pure overtone known as a harmonic.Natural harmonics occur at fixed points like the 12th, 7th, and 5th frets — places where the string naturally divides into equal parts.

Artificial harmonics, on the other hand, allow you to create harmonics anywhere on the fretboard by combining fretted notes with delicate right-hand techniques. They open up a world of colors and possibilities, especially in pieces that require shimmering textures or harp-like effects.
