A new edition has been added to the MF Editions catalogue:
Intermezzo in B minor, Op. 119 No. 1 by Johannes Brahms, transcribed for classical guitar by Carlo Marchione.
Composed in 1893, the Intermezzi Op. 119 belong to Brahms’ final piano works — music of compression, introspection, and quiet intensity. The first of the set unfolds as an inward meditation, where melodic fragments emerge and dissolve within a shifting harmonic landscape.
This new transcription brings the work into the guitar repertoire while preserving its depth and subtlety. Through careful voice leading and an emphasis on resonance, the arrangement allows the instrument to sustain Brahms’ layered writing without sacrificing clarity.
Rather than external drama, the piece demands control, patience, and sensitivity to nuance — qualities that define Brahms’ late style.
A reference performance of the original piano version is included below.
